Ghosts, Eidolons, Spirits, and Ghouls in Nineteenth Century American Poetry
In each nook most melancholy, -
There the traveller meets, aghast,
Sheeted Memories of the Past -
Shrouded forms that start and sigh
As they pass the wanderer by -
White-robed forms of friends long given,
In agony, to the Earth - and Heaven.
"Dream-Land," Edgar Allan Poe
Welcome to My Undead Project
The purpose of this website is to examine the difference in representations of ghosts, eidolons, spirits, and ghouls in 19th Century American poetry.
With poems included, I hope to analyze how these representations respond to different societal anxieties and needs.
